چکیده

Various ways of quantifying the nondeterminism in finite automata have been considered since the 1970’s. Roughly speaking, a nondeterminism measure can count the number of accepting computations (ambiguity), the number of all computations (computation width) or the amount of nondeterminism on a single best (or worst) computation on a given input. This paper surveys results on the growth rate of the nondeterminism measures and the descriptional complexity of nondeterministic finite automata with limited nondeterminism.

State Complexity of Nondeterministic Finite Automata with Limited Nondeterminism

Various approaches of quantifying nondeterminism in nondeterministic finite automata (NFA) are considered. We consider nondeterministic finite automata having finite tree width (ftw-NFA) where the computation on any input string has a constant number of branches. We give effective characterizations of ftw-NFAs and a tight bound for determinizing an ftw-NFA A as a function of the tree width and ...

Ambiguity, Nondeterminism and State Complexity of Finite Automata

The degree of ambiguity counts the number of accepting computations of a nondeterministic finite automaton (NFA) on a given input. Alternatively, the nondeterminism of an NFA can be measured by counting the amount of guessing in a single computation or the number of leaves of the computation tree on a given input. This paper surveys work on the degree of ambiguity and on various nondeterminism ...

Removing Nondeterminism in Constant Height Pushdown Automata

We study the descriptional cost of removing nondeterminism in constant height pushdown automata — i.e., pushdown automata with a built-in constant limit on the height of the pushdown. We show a double-exponential size increase when converting a constant height nondeterministic pushdown automaton into an equivalent deterministic device. Moreover, we prove that such a double-exponential blow-up c...

Communication Complexity Method for Measuring Nondeterminism in Finite Automata

While deterministic finite automata seem to be well understood, surprisingly many important problems concerning nondeterministic finite automata (nfa’s) remain open. One such problem area is the study of different measures of nondeterminism in finite automata and the estimation of the sizes of minimal nondeterministic finite automata. In this paper the concept of communication complexity is app...

Two-Way Finite Automata with a Write-Once Track

The basic finite automata model has been extended over the years with different acceptance modes (nondeterminism, alternation), new or improved devices (two-way heads, pebbles, nested pebbles) and with cooperation. None of these additions permits recognition of non-regular languages. The purpose of this work is to investigate a new kind of automata which is inspired by an extension of 2DPDAs. M...
